Before you go
- Immigration's rule: residence applications go to the office covering the APPLICANT's address, not the employer's.
- A Certificate of Eligibility (COE, 在留資格認定証明書) for someone abroad is different: it goes to the bureau or district office covering the host company or the sponsoring relative's address.
- Airport offices (Narita, Haneda, Kansai, Chubu…) do not handle residence procedures.
- Just moved? Apply at the office for your new address, after registering the new address at city hall.
- Not sure where to go? Call the Immigration Services Center (外国人在留総合インフォメーションセンター) 0570-013904 (IP phone / from abroad: 03-5796-7112).
Frequently asked questions
Can I renew my visa at the immigration office near my company?
As a rule, residence applications (renewal, change of status…) are filed at the office covering where the applicant lives — the address on the residence card — not the employer's address.
What are immigration office hours? Are they open on Saturday?
Most accept applications 9:00–16:00 on weekdays; many branch offices close 12:00–13:00. No applications on Saturdays, Sundays or public holidays. Each office's hours are on its regional page.
Can I renew my visa at an airport immigration office?
No. Immigration states that airport offices do not handle residence procedures.
What if I can't go to the office?
With a My Number Card you can apply online through the Residence Application Online System (在留申請オンラインシステム), or ask an authorised agent such as a gyoseishoshi (行政書士) to file for you.
Where do I apply for a COE for my family?
As a rule, at the bureau or district office covering the sponsoring relative's address (or the host organisation). Some branch offices do not accept COE applications for certain statuses, so check first.
